Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
I have made multiple presentations at reputed international conferences (including ACM SIGDOC Conference in Washington DC and IEEE-ACM conference in Sri Lanka) on topics related to use of 3D Printing in English classroom environment. Also, these conference presentations were supported by proceeding publications that are indexed by major indexing services. With this project, I have published two book chapters and published my research in a major education journal published by Taylor and Francis. Further, three new and unique undergraduate coursework on language teaching with 3D printing-related project based learning methods is in the process of being set up at UoA.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
I finished the work on setting up the lab for 3D scanning and design very quickly during the first year. Further, I could set up an exclusively unique course on 3D Printing for Technical Communication at the graduate level during the first year of this project.
That helped me see the problems on design and language education rather quickly and also helped me to figure out the design and language teaching problems that cropped out along the way.
So now, the undergraduate coursework has been designed accordingly and I am currently setting up the new coursework and writing proceedings/journal articles discussing how to use design education more effectively for language teaching.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Future plans on this project include writing journal and proceedings articles on this new form of computer assisted language learning, and explore how design education could be effectively included with project-based learning in a language course specifically designed for computer science majors.
I am currently working with a reputed German university (Karlsruhe Institute of Applied Sciences) to set up an exchange program on using 3D printing-related processes for technical communication. I will be presenting my research at world forums (TC World in Germany) and JTCA conference in Tokyo in an effort to set up this partnership.
I will also be presenting my research on 3D Printing in language education at international CALL conferences in USA (CALICO in Arizona and CALL in UC-Berkeley).
|
Causes of Carryover |
This will be the final year of my 3-year project, and this year I would like to present my research at various national and international conferences, and would also like to set up an exchange program partnership with Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences, Germany to run the 3D printing-related language projects outside of Japan. Besides, partnership with JTCA will be an ongoing effort to promote my research elsewhere in Japan. Such national and international travel will require funding.
Also, I would like to buy more iSense 3D scanners and iPad mini to run the 3D scanning project more extensively in a language and design education context.
|
Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget |
The 3D scanners and iPad minis that I will buy will be used in my undergraduate elective classroom. This will help me run a design project using various apps for documentation purposes. A Mac book Air will be purchased to run these student design projects and use the Mac book to collect the design feeds and resultant project documentation and store it locally as a showcase for future classes.
