Outline of Final Research Achievements

The expression of sex steroid metabolizing enzymes in the cardiovascular system was analyzed by immunohistochemical method using normal rats and pulmonary hypertension models. The analyzed enzymes were 5alpha-reductase type 1 (5alpha-R1), 3alpha-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3alpha-HSD), 17alpha-hydroxylase/17,20-lyase (CYP17), 3beta-hydroxysteoid dehydrogenase (3beta-HSD) and 5beta-reductase (5beta-R). These enzymes were expressed in the endothelia, fibroblasts and atrial myocardial cells. The expression of 5alpha-R1 and 3alpha-HSD in the pulmonary artery increased in pulmonary hypertension models. Hence, the steroids produced by sex steroid metabolizing enzymes are supposed to be involved in the regulation of the cardiovascular function.
