Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Endemic fluorosis has been reported in many countries. Neurotoxic effects of fluoride on the ability of learning and memory have been focused lately. In this study, we evaluated the neurotoxic effects of fluoride on the learning ability of mice at low doses in the drinking water. Pregnant ICR mice were administered fluoride in the drinking water 0, 5, 25 or 50 ppm. After weaning, the female and male F1 mice were also administered fluoride in the drinking water 0, 5, 25 or 50 ppm until 6-months of age. The mean number of entries without repetition in the 5, 25 or 50 ppm group was significantly level than that in the control at the Y-maze test. The mean time spent in the escape box in the 5, 25 or 50 ppm group was significantly lower than that in the control at the Barnes maze. From the results of the Y-maze test and the Barnes maze, it was demonstrated that the exposure to fluoride drinking during stage from fetus and development induced cognitive deficit.
