Research Abstract |
This project aims to estimate global distribution of land surface energy and water budget for ten years to reveal the key processes in land surfaces, which have large impact on climatic and environmental change of the global water circulation. We carefully intercompare number of land surface models and their outputs with same boundary conditions and atmospheric forcings. In the last year of this grant (H16-H17), we have had following research fruits. 1.We archived 15 model-outputs in a daily and 1-degree scale for 10 years. Several simulations were executed with different conditions or settings, so that the amount of the datasets increases in multiplied by each simulation. The intensive analyses revealed that multimodel ensembles are relatively quite reasonable and closer to the reality by validation with observed soil moisture data. 2.Intercomparison Center (Inter-comparison center) was developed with up-to-date internet technology and data mining schemes. ICC visualizes the massive 4-dimensinal simulation data and helps users to capture and understand the hidden land surface processes. ICC has been internationally praised by not only our close research groups but also ordinary users. Data Distribution Center (DCC) was also developed to exchange the simulated data and the forcings. Over 300,000 files in "the most plausible datasets by multimodel analyses" have been downloaded until March, 2006. 3.The most plausible land surface estimation illustrated a new categorization of global hydro-climatic characteristics and more detailed information for water circulation. These results were published in the technical report of COLA (Center for Ocean, Land, and Atmosphere) in 2006, and will probably be included in a special issue of Science on the freshwater circulation and climatic changes.
