Research Abstract

Steam reforming, partial oxidation and autothermal reforming in microreactor were considered as a hydrogen production process for the small-sized fuel cell. Autothermal reforming has some merits such as no heat supply and short start-up time. However, rise in local temperature at the entrance of the reactor is problem. The objective of this study was to develop the microreactor to which oxygen gas was a supplied separately. The preparation method for micro-structured catalyst was developed and the suitable catalyst for autothermal reforming was investigated.
In order to insert the micro-structured catalysts in the microreactor made from stainless steel, the micro space with parallelogram shape was fabricated. In this study, commercial CuZuAl catalyst was used for the reforming of methanol or dimethyl ether (DME). After mixing the catalyst with the silica sol synthesized by sol gel method, the micro structure which consists of 10 microchannels of approximately 1mm size was dried, calcined and formed to the micro-structured catalyst. The reforming temperature of methanol for the micro-structured catalyst is slightly higher than that for the commercial catalyst.
The steam reforming of methane and DME was carried out on the precious metal loaded ceria-zirconia catalysts with high oxygen supply. It is found that Rh loaded Ce_<0.15>Zr_<0.85>O_2 catalyst indicated the best performance.
