Research Abstract

The progress of biology is very remarkable during the modern science and they say 21 centuries is the age of life science. Specially, the research on the gene, which is the draft of the life, remarkably improves. As analysis about gene progressed, it was found that most of the, life activities, such as morphogenesis and physiological phenomenon, were depended on the function of the gene. On the other hand, the genetic operation technology improved as proceedings of genetics. It became possible that a gene that was not included in the species originally, was inserted into it. New industries, related the genetic modified food and so on, are developed rapidly as the applications of the research of gene.
This study aims at the development of the integrative biology curriculum that is suitable for the future age. We investigated recognitions of schoolchildren about the genetic phenomena and the mechanism of development, in 2004, for the purpose of examining how to introduce the gene functions and the general idea of gene on the study of "Organisms and the Environment" in the elementary school science. We enforced some practical classes in 2005, with a purpose of introducing gene and the gene function through the sperm in the fertilization and pollen function in the pollination, in the course of learning of the continuity of the life at the fifth grade in the elementary school. The rates of the children who did the description that related to the heredity and the information increased rapidly from 10% to 80%. We thought the children at the fifth grade in the elementary school could understand the information that the morphology of organisms were taken over by parents to the children in the process of the fertilization or pollination.
