Research Abstract |
In his youth, Paul Valery (1871-1945), who, in the 1930 s and the 1940 s, put all his energies into what he called "the politics of the mind" (la politique de l'esprit0 to avoid the war, was deeply influenced by the patriotic and even the imperialistic thoughts. The young Valery, seeing the considerable expansion of armaments and economy in Germany, Italy and Japan, deplore the lack of strong heads in France, like Cecil Rhodes and Helmuth Moltke and continue to be indifferent toward social movements to restitute the rights and the human dignity. He thinks that the reasons of State must be given top priority in a weakened country like France. This way of thinkings will be cleared up, at least partly, when we take into consideration the Valery weakened by the devastating love for Madame de Rovira which lead to the legendary "Night of Genova". In his mind, his own destiny and that of his country are closely connected. In his writings, from his first political essay sur Germany to his last anthologies "Corona" et "Coronilla", dedicated to Jean Voilier, we can find and appreciate a marvelous combination of intelligence and sensuality.
