Research Abstract |
In this project, we study real organizational behaviors and structures from three viewpoints to consider nature of the firm. First, we consider firm behavior as economic agency as a whole in the market. Second, we recognize it as aggregation of individual behaviors in organization. Finally, we understand it as the relationship between individuals conducted under some rules in organization and society. The last viewpoint shows that organizational and individual behaviors can be integrated under the rules and institution. That is, organization is the result of unconscious interactions between individuals who have limited ability. And organization, though the result of the relationship which comes from interaction of the individuals in organization, is also the entity which be permitted by law. Therefore, organizational behaviors and structures can be understood as the relationship between individuals (institution) as well as the social entity permitted by rules (institution). Generally, Institution should be perceived as not only rules, but culture, custom, and even personal preference. However, almost always, the formal relationship such as the contact is focused on relative to the informal relationship as social norms, although both rule and social customs are also provided with the interaction between individual behaviors. And institution is persistent and varying in society and then we need explain the dynamic process of evolution of institution. We must have the new framework which can analyze those challenges. In the project, we proposed the new paradigm with the following viewpoints. 1. Develop a concept of institution to be able to analyze both rule and social custom. 2. Emphasize a focus on organizational behavior as the relationship of individuals in organization. 3. Advance a framework to explain the dynamic process of evolutional change of institution.
