Research Abstract |
Zenithal Bistable Device (ZBD) is one of candidate for substitution of the conventional LCD, because of the faint power consumption for still image. In this study, fundamental research for the molecular alignment of ZBD was performed. First of all, experiment of surface relief gratings achieved by holographic UV Laser light was carried out. Here, He-Cd laser was prepared by the Grant-in-Aid. Reproducibility and optimum condition for fabricating the surface relief gratings (SRG) was investigated. As a second step, ZBD was fabricated by combining with the SRG substrate. Simultaneously, finite element method (FEM) simulation for analyzing the switching behavior of ZBD was performed. It is clarified that the pitch of the gratings as well as the height of the gratings are the important factor to realize the appropriate bistablity. In order to align the liquid crystal molecules perpendicular to the grating surface, surface polar anchoring energy of the homeotropic alignment film was investigated. To establish the measurement method of surface polar anchoring energy, novel measurement procedure was invented, called "Symmetric Oblique Incidence Transmission Ellipsometry (SOITE) method." Furthermore, novel bistable driving mode was proposed. Substituting the grating surface by stripe alignment pattern with homogeneous alignment and homeotropic alignment, two alignment states were revealed.
