Research Abstract |
In recent years, new applications for the spectroscopic polarimetry have been extensively studied especially in the fields of biomedical optics and industrial metrology. Since such new applications frequently demand the in vivo or in line measurements, it is strongly required to realize the spectropolarimeter with the small sensing head. However, the conventional methods for the spectropolarimetry are not suited for this purpose, because they require either mechanical or active elements for polarization analyzing. In this project, we developed a spectroscopic polarimeter with an ultra-small sensing head by use of the principle of the channeled spectropolarimetry. The method, invented by the present authors in 1998, has features that no mechanical or active components for polarization control are required and that all the wavelength-dependent parameters for the state of polarization of light can be determined at once from a single channeled spectrum. In this research, we modified and improved its principle so that it is applicable for the fabrication of the ultra-small sensing head. The project was conducted in three steps. In the first step, we developed a scale-up model for the sensing head. We then designed the ultra-small sensing head based on the experience with the scale-up model. In the second step, we fabricated the ultra-small sensing head for the channeled spectropolarimetry. The cross-section of the fabricated sensing head is almost the same as that of a pencil. In the third step, we improved the sensing head and the signal processing scheme in order to enhance its performance. The final performances, especially the stability and the accuracy, become comparable to those of the current state-of-the-art spectroscopic polarimeter with a big sensing volume.
