Research Abstract

The aim of this project is to develop a new brain-computer interface system which detects changes of the alpha wave of EEG.
The project consists of the two researches :
1. Nonlinear properties of EEG response to flicker stimuli
2. Identification of alpha attenuation originated from mental focusing
The first research has been performed to obtain useful observations for mathematical modeling and elucidation of the underlying system of the alpha wave. Phase response of the alpha wave to color-alternating flicker stimuli and the dependence of the phase response on stimulus frequency have been examined.
The second research has aimed at establishing an effective method for brain-computer interface. We have tried to detect the alpha attenuation originated from mental focusing and discriminate between the alpha attenuation and spontaneous fluctuation of the alpha wave. We analyzed the amplitude dynamics in mental focusing evoked by various mental tasks such as mental arithmetic, memory retrieval, m … More emorization and visual imaging of Kanji writing. In particular, the study focuses on (1) finding of tasks evoking the alpha attenuation effectively and (2) consideration of discrimination method of the alpha attenuation
The observations obtained are
1. (1) In-phase locking of the alpha wave is evoked by the color-alternating flicker stimuli.
(2) EEG Response intensive and stabilized under the condition of the stimulus frequency in the alpha wave. Entrainment of the alpha wave may be dominant to the EEG response.
2. (1) Memory retrieval as well as mental arithmetic is found to be effective for evoking the alpha attenuation. Recognition rate of mental focusing is in the range from 70 to 85 % for overall participants. The recognition rate for memorization and visual imaging is less than 60 %.
(2) Proposed evaluation of alpha amplitude for the determination of mental focusing using stochastic approach enables us to discriminate between the alpha attenuation by mental focusing and spontaneous alpha fluctuation. Less
