Research Abstract |
In the first phase of the study, characteristics of oil seepage and retention in soils were investigated through laboratory experiments. Kerosene and A-heavy oil were permeated naturally into water-content controlled unsaturated soils (sand, sandy-loam, and amount of seeped oils was measured related to the initial water content and the suction pressure developed in soils. The results revealed that water content of soils which induce oil seepage was about 40%, and the oil seepage simulation was carried out using VG model based on the experimentally obtained negative pressure-volumetric oil content in unsaturated soils. In the second phase of the study, purification experiments for oil contaminated soils were conducted using various detergents. The most efficient detergent was found to be a hydrogen peroxide solution (0.5% concentration) which attained 90% purification rate, and the necessary amount of purification was also little (about 0.4 pore volumes) compared to other detergents such as sodium hydroxide (0.1%) and sodium silicate (1%,5%).
