Research Abstract |
Diabetic macular edema is a major cause of decreased visual acuity. Among several therapy for the disease, vitrectomy has been employed with favorable effect as a result of inducing posterior vitreous detachment (PVD). In order to avoid complications following vitrectomy, enzymatic vitrectomy, inducing PVD with single injection of plasmin into the vitreous cavity, has been applied to the diabetic macular edema. Recombinant microplasmin (rmpli) was injected into the vitreous cavity of experimental animal and electrophysiological as well as histological studies were carried out, in addition to in vivo ultrasound examination. The injection of rmpli induced PVD in experimental without ill effect to each eyes. Because clinical experiment is now going on in Europe and U.S., We used autologous plasmin for 53 cases of the disease with good results. The rmpli will be one of the effective intraoperative adjunct to treat diabetic macular edema.
