Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study was to establish the non-invasive evaluation of the skeletal maturation using ultrasound and to investigate the relationship between ultrasound imaging and the bone age assessed by the conventional method using hand-wrist X-rays. As the first step, bone age in total 119 subjects, who had hand-wrist X-rays, were measured by "BonAge" (Sunlight Medical Inc., Israel) at Dokkyo Medical University Hospital. "BonAge" uses the bone width of the wrist and the speed of sound (SOS) when passing through the wrist as parameters. Bone age was also measured using TW2 and CASMAS methods. A high correlation was shown between the conventional methods and "BonAge". However, this algorithm to calculate bone age was not clear. Therefore it was necessary to make a conversion table for standardization when "BonAge" was used for Japanese. The investigation was also needed to assess whether the wrist was the best place. Secondary, we developed a system to evaluate the skeletal maturation based on the ultrasound transmission method. From the results of measurement in three places including fingers and radius, I decided to measure at third middle phalanx. The continuous ultrasound of 5 and 7 MHz was transmitted from the transducer, and the penetrated ultrasound was received by the conventional ultrasonic diagnostic equipment (10MHz). The amplitude of the penetrated ultrasound was overlaid on the cross-sectional image around the gap, which corresponds to the amplitude of the received ultrasound. Moreover, the cross-sectional image was obtained for various widths between two plastic rods. When the gap between rods was wider, the amplitude of the penetrated ultrasound increased. There was high correlation between conventional methods and the ultrasound method. This study suggested that the non-invasive evaluation system of the skeletal maturation using ultrasound was useful for predicting the growth potential of the mandible in orthodontic field.
