Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究の遂行にあたっては、その開始時に非常に多くの時間をDushenko博士との議論に割いた。この議論の中で、当初の計画であるゲルマニウム中のスピン輸送物性については従来からのDushenko博士の研究によりかなりの部分が結果的に明らかになったことを認識できたことで、私とDushenko博士の総意として、さらに新しい挑戦的なテーマを遂行することを意識として共有できた。新たなテーマ設定に際しては、ゲルマニウム中のスピン輸送変調のためのキーテクノロジーであるゲート電圧印加、という視点で、新しい物理の探索を行うこととした。この研究計画の立案の部分で、私とDushenko博士の寄与は正にイーブンであり、本研究成果の帰属は正に1:1である。Dushenko博士は実験の遂行、モデルの構築で中心的な役割を果たし、私は実験の計画とモデル構築の過程における建設的批判を通じてその妥当性を高めるという役割を担った。結果として、金属材料ではゲート電圧による伝導度の変調は不可能である、という従来の物性物理学上の認識を、イオン液体ゲートを用いた強電界印加によって打破することができ、革命的とも言える業績を得ることができた。さらにゲート電圧印加によって、スピン流を電流に変換する逆スピンホール効果も数桁変調できること、この変調が白金の内因的なスピン軌道相互作用の外場による変調であることを明らかにできた。これは物性物理学において非常に重要かつ深遠なサイエンスの構築であり、極めて高く評価されるべきものである。
