Outline of Annual Research Achievements

アフリカとアジアの大型類人猿の生息する森林を構成する樹種の機能形質の比較をおこなうべく、アフリカのチンパンジー生息域のカリンズ森林（ウガンダ共和国）と、アジアのオランウータン生息域のキナバタンガン森林（マレーシア連邦サバ州）で樹木のサンプリングをおこなった。類人猿が好んで食べる葉（嗜好種）と食べない葉（不嗜好種）を比較しながら、樹木群集全体の葉面積、葉重、葉の堅さ、窒素含有量などを計測した。類人猿の嗜好種では、葉の堅さが低く、窒素含有量が高かった。また、極相種にくらべて遷移初期種あるいは遷移途上種に区分される植物に、類人猿の嗜好種が多い傾向があった。このことは、大型類人猿が極相林分では果実をおもに採食し、二次林では果実とともに葉を多く採食する行動観察と一致した。また、同じような採食行動は、カリンズ森林でチンパンジーと共存しているオナガザル類（ブルーモンキー、アカオザル、ロエスティモンキー）やキナバタンガン森林でオランウータンと共存しているテングザル やマカク類（ブタオザル、カニクイザル）でもみられた。アフリカとアジアの大型類人猿をはじめとする野生霊長類の保全のためには、原生林すなわち極相林の保全がもっとも重要視されてきたが、食物環境としては二次林の重要性を見直す必要があることを示す結果である。
