Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Mainly focusing on Hawai'i, Guam, and Okinawa while paying attention to other island regions that experienced US rule, such as the Ogasawara Islands, the Philippines, and Puerto Rico, this research explores the impact of US rule on the island regions, especially in terms of the cultural and social contact that was actualized by US military presence. The study intends to be multidisciplinary including findings from such fields as linguistics, history, environmental studies, sociology, and ethnic studies with a shared goal to define “American globalism.” The study finds a character of American globalism in its way of manipulating local island cultures and economy with pseudo-democratic strategies so that the local population would volitionally support and sustain US colonialism. The study, however, also indicates that American globalism would simultaneously enhance postcolonial resistance against the US as it ushers local communities to exercise their agency.
