Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
-18/3/16: published a journal article titled “On Document Becomings and the Documentary Theatre” in the journal, Studies in Literature and Culture, No52, Konan Women’s University. The article is an analysis of the moment of formation of analogue and digital documents in performative contexts. -13/6/16: read paper at International Federation for Theatre Research Conference, Univ. of Stockholm titled “In Search of Direction: Mapping, Materiality and Theatre Ecology in Rural Japan.” Writing this paper has helped broaden the scope of my Wakate Kenkyu A research project to consider the relationship between the body, the document and the ecological site in performance. -27/9/16; 25/10/16; 24/1/16; 27/3/17: published 4 articles in the Japan Times newspaper covering international theatre festivals in Japan. These articles enabled me to investigate new trends in the global performing arts world providing important contextual information for my research project. -1/10/16: read paper at the Intl. Assoc. of Performing Language conference in Kinosaki, titled “Re-performing News Narratives in the Case of Living Newspaper.” The paper analyzed the effectiveness and impact of the use of documentary theatre techniques in a class on media that I teach at Konan Women’s University.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Over the 2016/2017 period, the first year of this research project, I have made progress in four specific areas. Firstly, I was able to purchase a range of core academic texts related to this research project and begin reading and collating information. This was consolidated by a research trip to London in March 2017, where I was able to consult key performance studies archives, including the British Library and the Live Arts Agency. Secondly, by attending and giving papers at two international conferences, (Univ. of Stockholm, Kinosaki Performing Arts Center), I have been able to expand the scope of my research, receive critical feedback from conference participants, and forge new contacts in my research field. Thirdly, I have been able to incorporate elements of my research into a class on new media cultures that I teach at Konan Women's University. Finally, I was able to begin writing two major articles that draw on this first year of study, which I intend to complete and submit for publication in late 2017 (cf. future research plan below.)

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Between August and September 2017, I will make use of the theatre archives at the Brotherton Library in the University of Leeds; the theatre collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum’s research centre (Blythe House) in London; the British Library’s performance collection; and the Live Arts Development Agency collection; in order to collate information for the research project. In addition to collecting data, I will use my research time in these institutions to analyze and write up the research material I have compiled thus far. The writing period will lead to three research outcomes. The first is the presentation of an academic paper on the body in performance as a document of mourning. This paper builds on my Wakate Kenkyu A research conducted in UK libraries in February/March 2017. The presentation will be given at the European Association of Japan Studies conference on September 1 2017 at Nova University in Lisbon, Portugal. The second outcome will be the completion of a theoretical article, that I began writing in late 2016. The third outcome will be the competition of an article that I began writing at the British Library in London in February 2017, based on an academic paper given at the University of Stockholm in 2016. I aim to submit both articles for publication during the Autumn/Winter semester in 2017. In early 2017, I intend to make a further study trip to the UK to continue the archival research conducted in February/March and August/September 2017.
