Outline of Final Research Achievements	To clarify the reasonable accommodations for persons with intellectual disabilities by public libraries, the author examined the current status of public library use and related needs among such persons and their families. Based on the results, appropriate approaches were considered. Three public libraries adopted 10 approaches to address 4 areas: understandable environmental considerations, understandable brochures, and library staffs’ attitudes and services. These approaches served as model cases to promote library use among persons with intellectual disabilities and reading support for them, revealing the necessity of respecting their needs and directly communicating with them through cooperation between library staff and facility/office employees when making reasonable accommodations for them.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements	本研究の学術的意義は、知的障害者の図書館利用の実態とニーズを当事者と家族を対象とした全国規模の調査によって明らかにし、知的障害者に対応した合理的配慮のある障害者サービスの具体的な内容と方法のモデルを示したことである。これにより、知的障害者が公共図書館を平等に利用して読書する意義と方策について、公共図書館をはじめ、障害者事業所や家族支援者等に広く示した社会的意義があったと考える。
