Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this study, I have developed and verified a method to teach the music of the heike narrative, which was exposed to the crisis of tradition. Heike (also known as Heike Biwa) is a musical genre that narrates “The Tale of the Heike” to the biwa accompaniment and is a valuable cultural heritage of Japan handed down by blind musicians. But in 2015, there was only one player, who could play 8 pieces among 200 of the whole tale. Furthermore, he had difficulties in teaching the narrative. Therefore, in this study, I have developed the teaching materials and methods of the heike music for sighted musicians. Using the method, three young musicians learned the heike musical style and how to read the Edo period notation "Heike Mabushi". Thus, the effectivenss of the method was verified.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
