Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The purpose of this study is to explore how Japanese in the late Edo and Meiji periods, that is, the 19th and early 20th centuries, developed knowledge on Sinitic prose and poetry. Sinitic literature, including classical Chinese literature and Chinese-style works written by Japanese, formed a part of the basic knowledge of intellectuals from various occupations at that time, because of the educational system in clan schools and private academies, which emphasized the value of Chinese classical learning. This study clarifies how people in the Edo and Meiji periods learned and absorbed knowledge on classical Chinese poetry by analyzing anthologies edited and printed in Japan. Information on the pieces of work that Japanese editors considered important can be obtained by examining their contents. A precise picture of the reception of Chinese literature can reveal the necessity of partly renewing the current description of the history of Sinitic literature in Japan.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
