Outline of Final Research Achievements

The humanist culture, which emphasizes an individual’s efforts in the mundane world, and protestant ethics, that demands the absolute submission to the God and constant endeavor to get assured of the salvation of one’s soul in the next world, sometimes work together to motivate incessant active exertions, but often causes intolerable inner conflict in one’s mind. From the viewpoint of how dramatists articulate and deal with this contradictory mode of being through their creations, I analyzed “Henry the Sixth” and “Richard the Second, the plays written by Shakespeare in his early years, and “The Winter’s Tale” from the last years of his career.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

シェイクスピアのキャリア全体に亘って、彼の関心の中心にあった、個を超えた秩序への信奉とそれを破って自らの力を発揮しようとする意志という、相反するありようの起源の一つを、ヒューマニズムの文化と先鋭化した宗教倫理という、協同しつつ対立もする時代の思潮に求めて、初期の歴史劇と晩年のロマンス劇とで、それぞれがどう発現しているか解明して、シェイクスピアの中に流れる世俗的な関心と超越的なヴィジョンとがどのように影響し合い変容していったかを統一的に理解する視座の基礎が得られた。こういった視座は、シェイクスピアのみならず、他の劇作家や詩人たちの作品を理解する上でも、きわめて有効な手立てになると考えられる。
