Outline of Final Research Achievements

Following the conclusion of my book "Theme Revolts and the Byzantine Empire -- Constantinople Government and Local Legions" (Osaka University Press, 2016) which focused on military aspects, especially local rebellion, in the 8th and 9th centuries, I considered the political process of the empire from the viewpoint of administrative aspects, especially local province control. The three main points are: (1) A new perspective on the Thema as a local governance system, (2) An analysis of a historical source "De thematibus" by emperor Constantine VII, (3) The local administration of the Byzantine Empire in the 9th century seen in lead-seal materials and "Taktikon" documents.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

21世紀に入り8・9世紀のビザンツ帝国の研究は新たな展開を見せている。とりわけ，L.ブルベイカーとJ.ホルドンによる大著『イコノクラムス時代のビザンツ（歴史）』（2011年）は，教会史・政治史・社会史などの面で大胆な仮説を提示した。本研究では，9世紀のビザンツ帝国における地方行政制度であるテマ制について，ニケフォロス1世による改革という新たな論点を，8世紀の政治プロセスとの連続性の視点から検証することで，上記の研究書での行政史での大胆な推論を批判した。結果として，それは拙著『テマ反乱とビザンツ帝国』で主張した中期ビザンツの政治史についての仮説を補強することができた。
