Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In the final year of this funding (2018) I continued my previous research activities to collect data on the experiences of people with food allergies in Japan and the UK. In Japan, working closely with the NPO アトピッ子地球のネットワーク, I attended the Asian Alliance of Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis where I was able to collect data and discuss issues of food allergies across Asia with representatives from Hong Kong, Thailand, India, and Australia. I also ran a teenage workshop at the NPO's summer camp and facilitated a teenager workshop in November in collaboration with House Food Manufacturers, discussing food allergy issues with the participants and manufacturer. In addition to these activities I have continued to attend NPO meetings and events throughout the year doing participant observation and interviewing individuals in Japan.
In the UK, I interviewed adults with food allergies, and parents with food allergic children. In total I interviewed 17 individuals and attended a food allergy and anaphylaxis support group meeting at St Mary's Hospital in London, which was supported by Anaphylaxis Campaign. I also spent time at the Wellcome library and the British Library collecting recent research materials on food allergy. I also attended the EAACI medical conference in Copenhagen where I had the chance to talk with allergists, immunologists and the heads of patient organizations.
Lastly, I presented preliminary research results at five conferences, published one article on food allergy, have one article accepted, and have three articles on food allergy in preparation.
