Outline of Final Research Achievements

For protecting houses and farmlands from strong winds in the coastal areas, tree belts were planted to embrace each house, the whole hamlet and even along the coastline during the Ryukyu Kingdom Period. In this project, we inventoried the remaining fukugi (Garcinia subelliptica) trees on the Yaeyama Island group at the southernmost part of Okinawa, focusing on the dimensions and spatial distribution of the remaining homestead trees. We tallied thousands of remnant fukugi trees in Shiraho, Hirae and Maezato, Toketomi, and Yonaguni Town. From the tree ages estimated from DBH size, we found that a proportion of the old Fukugi trees may have survived the tsunami in 1771. However, the length and density of the tree belts diminished quickly after the sharp increase in population and number of nuclear families during the 1960s. Therefore, it is urgent that we develop a conservation project involving multiple stakeholders for conserving old growth trees in urban settings.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
