Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Using various methods such as immunoelectron microscopy and Western blot, IHC and IF methods, I detected that autophagy and PINK1-Parkin mitophagy pathway is upregulated in Sertoli cells (SCs) of acute ethanol-treated rats (ETRs) (5 gm/kg/bw), although many germ cells underwent apoptosis. The upregulation of Parkin in SCs of ETRs, compared to control may be anti-apoptotic mechanism against ethanol damaging effects. This enhanced autophagic response in SCs may be important also for survival of germ cells by supply of essential nutrition via a Warburg like mechanism and phagocytosis of germ cells via autophagy-associated phagocytosis. Stimulation of Parkin-related mitophagy SCs by natural and pharmaceutical methods may help in treatment of infertility associated with alcohol disorders.
