Outline of Final Research Achievements

Previous studies on staff-training for managing behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) based on applied behavior analysis (ABA) have not included maintenance systems. This study systematically reviewed academic ABA papers to examine the methods that can effectively decrease BPSD. The Staff Support System (SSS) for maintaining the effects of ABA was developed based on the findings. This study showed that SSS is a promising method for the long-term management of BPSD.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

BPSDの長期的な改善の持つ意義は、単に介護負担の軽減という直接的な影響だけには留まらない。現在、非薬物的な介入でBPSDが軽減されない場合、アメリカ食品医薬品局から警告が出されている抗精神病薬の使用が検討される可能性が高い。しかし、介護施設巡回型SSSが用いられるようになり、応用行動分析をはじめとする非薬物的な介入でBPSDがより長期にマネジメントできるようになれば、そのような薬剤の過剰な使用を防ぐことができる可能性がある。そのためSSSは今後のわが国における介護実践やBPSDケアの研究に非常に大きな意義を持つと考えられる。
