Research Abstract |
In this project, we have aimed to understand molecular genetic mechanism of development and morphogenesis of rice, Oryza sativa. (1) We have analyzed genetic and molecular function of C class MADS box gene that have multiple functions in regulating flower development. We revealed that the two C-class genes have been partially subfunctionalized during rice evolution (i. e., the functions regulated by AG have been partially partitioned into two paralogous genes OSMADS3 and OSMADS58, which were produced by a recent gene duplication event in plant evolution). (2) We cloned genes that regulate meristem maintenance in rice and revealed their functions in rice. In summary, the genetic pathway regulating meristem maintenance is fundamentally conserved in rice as that in Arabidopsis. We found that rice has additional pathways to regulate stem cell maintenance in addition to the conserved pathway. (3) We analyzed the function of the DROOPING LEAF (DL) gene, which is involved in midrib formation and carpel specification. We found several genes upregulated by overexpression of DL, which may be involved in midrib formation. We also revealed that DL activity and the size of midrib are closely associated each other, confirming the previous hypothesis that DL promotes cell proliferation in the central region of leaf primordia, and that this cell proliferation is critical for midrib formation in the mature leaves.
