Research Abstract |
This study aimed to develop Japanese language learning courseware on the internet using English and Italian languages in multimedia format with words, voices, pictures and moving images. The material for the courseware was classical haiku of the Edo period of Japan. It also aimed to examine instructional effectiveness of the courseware. These courses were created in two different formats; first, an open website that can be accessed by anyone, and second, a dosed courseware using a learning management system that can be accessed by a limited range of college students. The material or the content of the site was haiku poems of Yosa Buson (1716-1784). The site with Italian language was developed on the base of a series of units that incorporated a pair of the Japanese and Italian expression of the haiku poem, audio streaming of the reading of the Japanese poems, and the Italian translations and interpretations of the original poems. ry of Buson's paintings and writings and a video streaming section which was developed by the author and depicted the different places related to Buson's life. The site with English language was developed on the base of the file which listed Japanese original haiku poems and their translations in English. It was then converted into Power Point files which presented Japanese and English expression of the poems with one poem on one slide. An audio file which recorded the reading of the original Japanese poems was also created. These two kinds of files were then made up into a presentation in which the Power Point slide and the corresponding audio section were synchronized. Reference texts about Buson written in English were also prepared and were linked to other pages from the top page. After creating these two sites, online courseware using a learning management system was developed for both Italian and English languages. For this purpose, "Moodle" was used because it had been already introduced in the university to which the author belonged.
