Research Abstract |
The joint research "Comprehensive research in the character of Shanghai, the 'city of immigrants', and its transformation before and after the establishment of the Peoples' Republic of China (PRC)" being undertaken by the Shanghai Research Group of Japan (representative, Hirofumi Takatsuna, established in 1990) seeks to clarify the manner in which the special characteristics of Shanghai, a major urban center of East Asia where currently remarkable development steadily continues, were formed and have changed along its course as a modern city focusing on its character as a "city of immigrants" within the spatial and temporal expanse while taking into account its relationship with the various regions of East Asia and with other regions within China. Of special note as research results in 2007 was the international symposium, "The transformation of urban society and culture before and after the establishment of the PRC - Restructuring of space and life", held on September 22-23. s in the history of Shanghai active at the forefront from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea, France and other countries were invited to present reports and comments. Vigorous debates unfolded at the symposium regarding the characteristics of Shanghai, currently a major urban center of East Asia, based on comprehensive historical, cultural and socioeconomic perspectives focusing on the 1940s and 50s, which corresponds to the time before and after the establishment of the PRC. The Shanghai Research Group of Japan is planning to issue a collection of papers entitled "Shanghai Before and After the Founding of the Nation" based on the achievements of joint research over a period of three years. As the issue pursued, the collection will historically and concretely verify the transformation of the urban society and culture of Shanghai before and after the establishment of the PRC and highlight the period before and after 1949, a major turning point in modern Chinese history, from the perspective of the transformation of the urban society and culture of Shanghai. The collection will focus on the process of the restructuring of space and life in Shanghai before and after 1949 and will be built on the two general thematic groups of society and culture. The first is a group of papers regarding the fluctuations and the process of restructuring of urban society centered in Shanghai from the period of civil war through the early days of the republic and the other is a group of papers that shed light on the period before and after 1949, the major historical turning point, from the perspective of culture in Shanghai or the perspective of more marginal company organization or urban spaces as places for labor or education.
