Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to examine the negative heritage, which include negative aspects of the influence that the Pacific War and the defeat of Japan exert on the formation of Japanese society and Asia-Pacific region of postwar and, present memories of war as a detestable one. For this purpose, we conducted research on areas related to the Pacific War not only in Japan, but also in former Japanese colony, China, and Asia-Pacific region. We constructed cooperative relations with research institutes, libraries and museums concerned, to collect data. Here are three principal results. 1 The relation between the Pacific War and the change of Japanese society of the postwar period The influence that the war exerted on Japanese society of the postwar period was analyzed from the viewpoint of space use. In particular, we considered how former military reservations and regions damaged by the war were transformed, and how they affected structural change of Japanese society of the postwar period. This approach can be applied to not only Japan but also to the entire region and the nation involved in the Pacific War. 2 The region involved in the Pacific War and tourism development By approach1, it was clarified that the part of the former battlefield in the pacific region has been transformed into the tourist resort. It is necessary to pay attention to the reality that regions like Guam, Saipan and Palau are, now, recognized only as tourist resorts and the social change of these societies after the Pacific War is almost completely ignored. 3 The Culture produced by the war In the beginning of the Pacific War, Japan was gaining an advantage over the U.S.A. Japan was, therefore, into effervescence. The feeling of superiority was giving place to the creation even in the domain of philosophy and culture.
