Research Abstract |
Odor recorder together with visual information is an equipment to record odor together with movie by a video camera as well as to reproduce smell together with movie on a display. Reproduced odor should be synchronous with movie. Reality can be increased by adding olfactory information to visual one and it accelerates the progress of five-sense communication. This is the first approach to record and reproduce olfactory information synchronous with visual one although there have been so far a few examples of smells attached to images. In this study, odor blender, fabrication method of QCM gas sensor, sensing film materials for QCM gas sensor, robust sensing, an odor recorder -using an autosampler are studied. A QCM gas sensor used in this study had the reproducibility problem of a sensor characteristic. We reduced the variation of the characteristic from sensor to sensor using an atomizer method. composed of self assembled lipopolymer and self assembled spacer molecule was developed. Even a few tens ppb butanol was detectable using this sensor. Moreover, odor sensing system robust against environmental changes such as rapid concentration variation, humidity and temperature changes was studied. It was confirmed that the introduction of short term fourier transform followed by selection of appropriate frequency components enhanced the robustness. Furthermore, the odor recorder system with the capability of large-scale blending using an autosampler was developed. Several fruit flavors such as apple, banana etc were successfully recorded using this system. Finally, odor sensing together with visual recording followed by the smell reproduction synchronous with movie was performed. The situation where a sensing probe was approaching the can of juice was successfully reproduced using both visual and olfactory information. Then, the experiment on teleolfaction via Internet, where smell is remotely and simultaneously reproduced together with movie, was performed at the exhibition.
