| Research Abstract |
The project was organized with the intensive research programs targeting to perilla, agarwood and cinnamon, and the extensive programs for medicinal natural products used in the area Both parts were based on fieldwork performed in Indochina especially in Laos, Vietnam and Thailand. As for agarwood, results from experiments of artificial wounding and chemical administration on larger trees were combined with those from chemical treatments on cultured cells to derive a conclusion that sesquiterpenoid compounds in fragrant resin of agarwood was synthesized and accumulated in plant via inducible mechanism which was similar to the wound-response system, however, compounds of chromone derivatives were synthesized in a different system and increase their amount as the cultured cells were dying. Experiments of cinnamon were focused on the sweetness of cinnamaldehyde, which is a main compound of essential oil of cinnamon. It had not been known that cinnamaldehyde was the principal source of sweetness of cinnamon, but we found it in course of marching far the reason why cinnamon from mouth Vietnam was much sweeter than that from north. Perilla in Indochina is a kind of crop which has been cultivated for seeds (mericarps) to eat and people in this area do not use its leaves. Farmer's indifference toward leaf smell, in other words, type of essential oil, seems to be resulted in remaining of a variety of oil types, and a new type which contains considerable amount of a putative intermediate of the biosynthetic pathway for elsholtziaketone was newly found among them. Species of Zingiber were subjected for studies of organic syntheses in osier to be develop as a resource far biomass. Experiments and fieldworks under this project were effectively combined to give new information as Well as essential knowledge for future development of the plant resources of Indochina.
