Research Abstract |
In this study, we clarified the factor involved in the walk-run transition and the transition from heel-strike to forefoot-strike during running (HTL-FFL transition) by comparing the transition in the barefoot condition, in which the impact shock was larger than that in the shod condition, with the transition in the shod condition. We measured the impact shock, kinematics, and preferred walk-run transition speed (PTS) in nine participants, who underwent trials in both the barefoot and shod conditions. During these 30-s trials, they walked and ran on a treadmill whose belt speed was increased from 1.5 to 3.0 m/s in increments of 0.25 m/s. The joint torques around three leg joints (ankle, knee, and hip) were calculated as variables of the internal forces. The results indicated that 1) the walk-run transition was triggered by the internal forces, and 2) HTL-FFL transition was triggered by the impact shock.
