Research Abstract |
1) BIN-GATA has two carvings with white and colored fields, while AIZU-GATA and ISE-GATA have one carving with white or colored field. 2) There are two different technique of thin silk thread tension between BIN-GATA and ISE-GATA. Technique of BIN-GATA with Itokake (kind of thin silk thread tension) remains in Okinawa Island, and that of ISE-GATA with. Itoire (a different kind of thin silk thread tension) exists in Mie Prefecture. 3) Figure of BIN-GATA is carved by a dyeing person who uses a stand of a small square Rukujyu which is produced by drying and processing of Tofu (bean curd) in Okinawa. 4) ISE-GATA is produced by workmen who carve figure and dye stencil; some of them have technically so outstanding that they become living national treasure. BIN-GATA is produced by workmen who do all process by themselves. 5) Dyeing of stencil in AIZU-GATA and ISE-GATA generally has a single color. On the other hand, that in Okinawa has mainly many colored dyeing with pigment, such as Irosashi (colored printing), Irokubari (coloration), Kumadori (dark gradation), and Nidozuri (twice colored printing), which produce aesthetic sense with fantasy, freedom, and brightness. 6) Style of dyeing has two methods; one is by stain such as BIN-GATA, and the other is by dyeing such as ISE-GATA and AIZU-GATA. 7) BIN-GATA is made a design, while design of ISE-GATA creates a delicate atmosphere and that of AIZU-GATA is technically outstanding. 8) I have been leading a graduate student who taught BIN-GATA as teaching materials in Okinawa, and published some papers concerning dyeing of stencil in Japan under joint signature with me.
