Research Abstract |
The National Research Institute for Cultural Properties, Tokyo was developed a portable X-ray fluorescence analyzer at few years ago. In this research project, material analysis of many kinds of cultural objects has been performed by using the portable X-ray fluorescence analyzer. (1) Analysis of painting materials used for Kasuga-Gongen, The Museum of Imperial Collections The painting materials used for surface and underlayer were investigated. Two kinds of green-colored pigments was found. (2) Analysis of materials used for gold or silver-clored thread Gold and silver thread were considered to be used gold and silver leaf, respectively. However, gold and lead were detected from some gold thread used in clothes made in 18-19 century. For the silver thread, tin leaf was used in some samples. (3) Analysis of materials of gilted bronze The materials of base metal and gilt were investigated. The chemical composition and thickness of gilt were simultaneously determined by using XRF.
