| Research Abstract |
This project attempts to examine Andaman and Nicobar islands under Japanese control from the standpoints of imperial history, military history and colonial history.
The position of Andaman and Nicobar islands during the World War II is still open to debate, because most studies on Japanese military occupation have highlighted Southeast Asian countries, and even in the context of historiography on Indo-Japanese relations, little speculation has taken place except studies on Burma invasion and Imphal military operation.
In order to fill this gap critically, we need to incorporate historical documents of both side countries, the Allies and Axis of Second World War, which other investigations have respectively dealt with. We completed inclusive retrieval and achieved comprehensive collection from the archives in the United Kingdom and Japan.
Our research reveals following points :
1. War against Japan and British defense policy of India
2. Defense of Andaman and Nicobar islands and Japanese military operation.
3. System, organization, personnel, and policy under Japanese control
4. The Provisional Government of Free India (the Arzi Hukumat-e-Azad Hind) and Andaman and Nicobar islands
5. Andaman Nicobar affairs in the War Crimes Tribunal
6. Postwar rehabilitation of the islands and relations with Burma.
As the result of study, we compiled a database "Bibliography on Andaman Nicobar islands" and wrote an article "Andaman and Nicobar islands during the World War II".
This project also planned to interview in the Andaman Nicobar islands and thereby to establish the oral archives. However, we had to postpone the plan due to the catastrophic damage to the islands by 2005 Sumatra earthquake. From this point we might go on to an even more detailed examination.
