Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to digitize scripts of Chinese classic operas and to develop the basic framework and methods of analyses for a comprehensive database of Chinese classic operas, from the standpoint of the establishment of the computer-aided Humanities. During this project, we have digitized some scripts of Chinese classic operas, such as Liushi zhong qu (Sixty operas), and essays on these operas, such as Jinyue kaozheng (A study on today's music). We have designed XML Schema for this digitization, which may satisfy the requirements of Chinese classic opera studies. These digital texts are published as a cross-searchable database in the website of the Japan Association for Chinese Urban Performing Arts (JACUPA). Concurrently in order to explore the basic technology for the phonological analysis of opera scripts, we have digitized Zhongyuan yinyun (the phonology of the Central Plains) and developed a prototype visualization system of phonological information of the digital scripts. We experimentally analyzed the phonological characteristics of Liushi zhong qu using NGSM (N-gram based System for Multiple documents) and SplitsTree (a program for analyzing and visualizing evolutionary data), and ascertained the value of these applications. Moreover, we made a translation and annotation of Jiao Xun's Ju shuo (On drama) and published it both in the journal of JACUPA and on the web. A concordance of terms of Chinese classic operas has created based on this annotation. The research results mentioned above were published as papers for academic journals and presented in conferences. Consequently, we believe that the foundation for developing the comprehensive database of Chinese classic operas, and the expected purpose of this project has been achieved.
