Research Abstract |
The purpose of the present inquiry was to empirically verify the existence of the parallel multiplicity of syntactic structures, and to construct a linguistic theory which can capture the properties of structural parallel multiplicity properly and make it available within a proper domain. I examined recent studies based on Minimalist Program and Optimality Theory from both empirically and theoretically, and clarify the problematic points of their analyses. I investigated the phenomenon of duplication of the copula verb be, observed in informal speech among others, and clarified that we can observe grammar expansion from the basic form is is to various variants, such as is was and was was, through modifications of the properties found in the basic form. I also carried out researches into a group of constructions including relative clauses, cleft sentences, and presentational sentences from the developmental viewpoint of language acquisition. Close examination showed that those constructions develop gradually under the influence of each other through the process of acquisition. What happens at the early stages of language acquisition is eventually reflected in various parts of adult grammar. It can be observed again that there are extensional relationships, from basic to derivational forms, among them. Furthermore, it is suggested that the forms which emerge earlier in the process of language acquisition need not be 'basic' when we see them from the point of view of adult grammar which is constructed in the end.
