Research Abstract |
This project produced, through Action Research, a concrete methodology of teaching English as an International Language (EIL), a concept which had long remained an abstract idea rather than a practical pedagogy even among its supporters. This method which is named "Integrated Practice in Teaching EIL (IPTEIL)" is a classroom pedagogy which enables the teachers to train their students in international communication when it involves varieties of English with its linguistic and cultural diversity. IPTEIL, in which students compare world news media real-time through the Internet, integrate multiple educational concepts with the concept of EIL. They include Legitimate Peripheral Participation in a Community of Practice, Global Education, Media Literacy Education, Critical Thinking, Newspaper in Education, Computer-Assisted Language Learning, Learner Autonomy, among others. By discussing various international news real-time, students participate in the actual community of EIL. Students are also introduced, by comparing various news media throughout the world, to varieties of values expressed in World Englishes. In this project, an educational model of Japanese English was also developed as a premise for IPTEIL. This model of English, named JEIL (Japanese English as an International Language) is a kind of English suited for expressing Japanese values. The products of this research project were made public though journal papers, books, invited lectures and presentations at international and domestic conferences, and DVD publications. During this research project, the researcher also received an award called Osaka University General Education Award three times for his teaching with IPTEIL.
