Research Abstract |
The aims of this study are as follows ; 1) to elucidate and revaluate the thought of Karl Koch who established the Baumtest as an aid of psychodiagnosis through the close reading of the original German text of "Der Baumtest dritte Aufl.", 2) to make clear the problems of the English and. Japanese translation of "Der Baumtest", 3) to examine the process of the introduction of Baumtest into Japan and 4) to discuss the style of case study for the clinical application and development of Baumtest. The results : 1) What Koch meant by "Psychodiagnose" is revealed through the semantic analysis. Koch intended to establish Baumtest as an aid for comprehensive understanding of the subject, rather than for differential diagnosis. The latter is not a final goal but included as only a part of the former. 2) The English and Japanese translation was compared with the original German text. It was found that the translators did not understand the basic stance and concepts of Koch, which resulted in making the translated version incomprehensible. The case interpretation in the original text showed the most impressively the basic attitudes of Koch, that is, to insist on the importance of intuition inspired while keeping and holding the Baum image in mind, careful description which leads to interpretation naturally and seeing the image both internally and externally. 3) It was found through the literature research that Japanese translators tried to introduce the Baumtest mainly on its developmental aspect and space symbolism without the basic concepts of Koch as above. 4) Although case study seems to be a powerful and effective method for applying Baumtest clinically, we have to adopt one-session focused style of case study as well as the conventional style to make more focus on the Baum image.
