Research Abstract |
Using a crossed-beam apparatus, we measured systematically the relative differential cross sections for the elastic scattering as well as for the charge-transfer process at very low energy region. A small electron-beam ion-source is employed to produce multiply charged ions. During the course of the project, we at first improved the performance of the ion-source and the intensity of the target supersonic-beam. Then we investigated the collisions for singly to quintuply charged C, N, O, F ions on He, Ne and Ar systems. The purpose of the work was to compare the results in iso-electronic and iso-nuclear sequence to reduce general tendency for the interaction potentials. Every collision system, however, was found to have its own strong character, therefore, it was necessary to analyze individually. For the collision systems C^<2+>, F^<2+> - He, no charge-transfer channel was observed, then the interaction potentials were determined straightforwardly by comparing the theoretical differential cross sections based on the ab initio potentials. In N^<2+>, O^<2+> - He systems, the charge-transfer cross sections are large, and the elastic cross sections were also affected by the reactions. The analysis 'of the cross sections taking into account the elastic and in-elastic scattering is now in progress. We also found that in N^<3+> O^<3+> on He, Ne systems, only the charge-transfer process accompanied by the rearrangement of the electron-configuration inside the projectile ions, i. e. the two-electron process, is opened. At somewhat higher energy region, this process is already found, but is not the main channel. This two-electron process is considered to be the feature of low-energy multiply-charged ion collisions, and the analysis of the process is also in progress.
