| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The primary purpose of the research is to identify and propose good practices, including gender-responsive approaches, to enhance education for sustainable production and consumption. The specific study subject is Education for Sustainable Consumption (ESC) and waste education. In Fiscal Year 2018, the fellow reported on the results of the literature review on the topic of Education for Sustainable Consumption and Gender, specifically the inclusion of gender perspectives in waste education programs. The outcomes of this activity comprise a conference presentation in May 2018 and corresponding proceedings paper, as well as, the publication of an original full-length paper published in December 2018. The first round of field surveys was conducted in Maputo City, Mozambique in August 2018, where the fellow identified and interviewed local stakeholders involved in waste education initiatives. Next, the fellow carried her work on the topic and developed a framework for gender mainstreaming into waste education programs, which was initially showcased in a conference in November 2018, followed by a publication of an original paper incorporating the feedback from the conference participants, in March 2019. Moreover, the fellow co-authored two policy briefs: one on the Voluntary National Reports on the Agenda 2030 in the Asia-Pacific region; and the other on Gender Mainstreaming in the Agenda 2030. Lastly, the fellow continuously participated and contributed to events organised and related to the UNU-IAS.

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
In Fiscal Year 2018, the majority of the research objectives planned were accomplished. Nevertheless, time and financial resource limitations meant that comprehensive field surveys and interviews were not completed. Moreover, while the fellow successfully developed a gender mainstreaming framework for waste education programs, it is still a theoretical framework that needs to be tested/piloted. To do so, an online global questionnaire survey was launched in November 2018, targeting waste education promoters. However the response rate was non-satisfactory, and the fellow is planning new strategies to complete the final stage of the research objectives. Hence further resources are needed to complete this task in Fiscal Year 2019.
Additionally, the fellow was able to participate in a professional and academic development activity - the 2019 Winter School for Sustainable Waste Management focusing on Landfill management and mining, in January 2019.

| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
For Fiscal Year 2019, the fellow plans to pilot the constructed conceptual framework, possibly in a case study in Maputo City in Mozambique. That will be accomplished either with a field trip to Mozambique or remotely, depending on the available resources (time and financial). Also, to compose and prepare a short report on the results of the global survey questionnaire.
Other publications currently being developed, are on the topics of the performance of governance mechanisms of the Regional Centers of Expertise (RCEs) from the UNU-IAS, and also on the topic of circular economy and food waste management. The fellow also expects to be able to engage in Academic conferences and Professional/Academic development activities.
