Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Dr. Simangan has advanced her research from the commencement of her fellowship in September 2017 to March 2018. She published four sole-authored papers in peer-reviewed journals, three of which are directly related to her postdoctoral research. She also focused on drafting her book, and the manuscript is now under review with the Routledge Studies on Intervention and Statebuilding. The research grant for purchasing of books and stationery and proofreading fees helped her in completing her manuscripts. To expand her research network and prepare for fieldwork, she traveled to Australia in March 2018 to attend research meetings, university seminars, and a conference on peacebuilding. Her research meetings in Australia led to a collaboration plan with an Australian scholar to co-author a paper about local involvement in mine action activities in Cambodia, which is related to her research on rebuilding security in Cambodia. She used the research grant for overseas travel and conference registration for these activities.
The fellow was also active in academic networking within Japan. She is now conceptualizing a paper to be co-authored with a Japanese scholar. Dr. Simangan also submitted paper proposals to several international academic conferences. The academic associations accepted her abstracts, and she is now drafting the papers for presentation. The research grant covered her academic association fees in anticipation of these conferences.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Dr. Simangan achieved more progress than she initially planned. Her publication of four peer-reviewed research articles in high-quality academic journals within seven months exceeded her plan to publish at least three articles within one year. She also fulfilled her plan of having her paper proposals accepted to international academic conferences. Dr. Simangan also achieved her plan of submitting a book manuscript to a press. Her manuscript is now under review, and her plan of publishing her book is on schedule. She also completed her planned research meetings leading to future research collaborations.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
To further develop her research portfolio, Dr. Simangan is currently drafting four papers for conference presentations and publication in peer-reviewed journals. She aims to submit these papers to academic journals within the year. She will also spend most of her time this year conducting fieldwork, analyzing fieldwork data, and drafting papers, as planned. She is scheduled to present her papers at three international academic conferences. While her current research and personal work are going smoothly, it is essential at this point for Dr. Simangan to explore research collaboration with academics within and outside Japan. Academic networking through associations and conferences will help Dr. Simangan to connect her research to relevant fields and branch out her research interests to other peacebuilding components. Dr. Simangan did not encounter challenges in the conduct of her research for FY 2017.
