Thermal conductivity clarification of parallel plate structured material with nanometer sized period - Toward realization of high ZT thermoelectric materials -

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

パルスレーザー堆積法や反応性固相エピタキシャル成長法を駆使してナノ周期平行平板構造薄膜を作製し、その物質、組成、角度と熱伝導率の関係をTDTR法によって精密に計測することで、「ナノ周期平行平板構造が熱伝導率に及ぼす影響を実験的に解明する」ことを目標として研究を行った。代表的な成果は、下記の2つである。
①ナトリウムイオンを層間に含む層状コバルト酸化物は、熱電能が大きく、導電率も高いことから、熱電材料として期待されたが、熱伝導率が高いため、室温のZTは0.03程度にとどまっていた。本研究では、層状コバルト酸化物のナトリウムイオンを様々な金属イオンに置き換えて、金属イオン層が重くなるにつれて、電気的な特性は変化せず、熱伝導率だけが減少することを突き止め、最終的に重いバリウムイオンに置き換えたとき、室温でZTが0.11に達することを発見した。
②セラミックの熱伝導は、原子の振動の伝播で起こるため、結晶の界面で大きく減衰する。一般に、結晶の方向が揃っていない多結晶には多くの界面が含まれているため、多結晶は単結晶よりも低い熱伝導率を示す。本研究では、数nm周期で二種類の成分が積み重なった「超格子」構造を有するセラミックの単結晶薄膜を作製し、超格子に直交方向、平行方向の熱伝導率の比較をするとともに、多結晶の熱伝導率と比較した。その結果、単結晶であるにも関わらず、超格子に直交方向の熱伝導率が多結晶よりも低いことを発見した。
