Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study aimed to reveal the specific features of state formation in Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia by analyzing the developmental regimes as one phase of long-term state formation processes in these countries. More specifically, this study aimed to clarify the fundamental strategic ideas to organize developmental regimes in these four countries. To achieve these goals, this study mainly conducted interview research on politicians, technocrats, bureaucrats, and businesspersons. As a result, the study revealed the concrete processes of development policies in Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Malaysia from the 1980s to the present, their relationship with state formation, and the roles of technocrats in development policies.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究を通じて得られた成果の意義としては、1980年代から現在に至るまでインドネシア、タイ、フィリピン、マレーシアの国家形成と開発政策に実際にたずさわった政治家や行政官のインタビュー記録が得られたことが挙げられる。とりわけスシロ・バンバン・ユドヨノ元インドネシア大統領に合計25時間以上にわたってインタビューをおこない、記録として残すことが出来たことは、本研究だけではなく今後、20世紀から21世紀初頭にかけての東南アジア地域の国家形成や開発政策を対象に研究をおこなう研究者に対して大きな学術的貢献があると言える。
