Outline of Final Research Achievements

When Assyrian reliefs were removed from their original locations, they were cut into pieces for transportation and have been housed in various institutions all over the world including many private collections. We focused on their material stones to examine their characteristics by applying an interdisciplinary approach from the point of view of textual, artistic, chemical and biological studies. Most stones used for Assyrian sculptures are gypsum which, however, vary from pure gypsum to what can be described as limestone. Some special stones were brought back to Assyria after military campaigns, one of which are characterised by its presence of large microfossils on its surface.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
