Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This year I have achieved progress in the theoretical demonstration on the systematic aging of multicellular systems and related this physical aging to a sort of non-equilibrium phase transition. Also, based on the theory, I have designed a new set of experiment for further investigation on the mechanism of aging of multicellular system. The simple model is a stochastic cellular automaton with the state of a cell flipping among division, death, and cell cycle arrest based on a set of rules of fundamental cell biology. Through analysis, it is found that the mechanism underlying regards the existence of multiple phases while the healthiest homeostasis stands on the boundary between the tumorigenic phase and the degenerative phase and undergoes a kind of absorbing phase transition as aging. The results of model analysis has been submitted to the Journal of Royal Society Open Science and the results of experiments have been presented at the 10th European Conference of Mathematical and Theoretical Biology.
