Outline of Final Research Achievements

Ukiyo-e prints, which played the main role in the Japonisme boom in Europe and the United States, have long been looked down on in Japan. However, research based on Western art history has strengthened in their countries and, in Japan, some connoisseurs have also been aware of these positive results.
The present project is aimed at clarifying this movement from three angles. Firstly, to discover its assessment in Europe and the United States, we searched the library of O. Munsterberg, who had collected documentation on Japanese art. We also analyzed the catalogues of the six-year series of exhibitions at the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, considered the culmination of Ukiyo-e research. In the field of Western art history research in Japan, we also examined the effects of journals and books on the subject of Japonisme. We then analyzed the texts of NAGAI Kafu and KOJIMA Usui, etc., who introduced Ukiyo-e studies abroad, and applied this methodology to their own writings.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

浮世絵版画が19世紀後半から欧米でコレクションされ、その研究が日本より先に行われていたこと、日本でもそれを紹介した人物がいたことは知られていた。が、作品相互の影響関係ではなく、文献による受容や影響関係については、調査が進められていなかった。
本研究では欧米や日本での著書や雑誌の紹介にとどまらず、それらの具体的な記述・評価の分析を行うことで、欧米での浮世絵版画の歴史や、画題の意味、絵師の作風や流派などがどのように理解されたかを明らかにした。現今の浮世絵ブームことに「里帰りコレクション」への一般での関心に即していたことで、講演会の機会も得られ、またジャポニスム研究においても貢献することができた。
