本年度は、百年戦争期の海峡横断的文学圏の特徴の一つとして、英仏両国の宮廷におけるバラード連作の隆盛という現象に着目し、昨年度に引き続き、historical formalismの視座からこの現象への考察を進めた。昨年度の研究では、John Gowerの “Cinkante Balades” に焦点を絞り、1380年代のフランスで編まれた “Livre de cent ballades,” その続編として書かれたOton de Granson のバラード、および両者との関連性が深いとされるChristine de Pizanの “Cent ballades d’amant et de dame” と比較しつつ、Gowerの仏語バラード集がその延長線上に位置する作品であることを確認した。本年度は、Gowerの死後、イングランドの宮廷に捕虜として滞在したCharles d’Orleans のバラード集を研究対象に含め、Gowerの作品との比較を通じて、百年戦争期の英仏両国の宮廷文学が双方向に影響を与え合った過程を明らかにした。
本年度の研究においては、上記の考察に加え、Trentham写本に収録されたGowerの別の仏語バラード集 “Traitie pour essampler les amantz marietz” の考察にも着手し、夫婦愛を社会の基盤と捉えるGowerの発想に、Philippe de MezieresやHonore Bovetの著作との類似性があることを確認した。その成果を2020年6月29日から開催予定であった国際会議2020 V International Gower Congressで発表すべく、本課題の補助事業期間延長を申請し承認されたが、コロナ禍のため、会議の開催は2022年7月に延期された。その会議において、本課題の成果の一端を発表する予定である。
